Mekong University – Study Medicine in Vietnam

Vietnam is a pragmatic place for students who want a full medical degree without the donation-heavy fee structure of many private colleges at home. Teaching hospitals are busy, the country is stable and living costs in student cities are still lower than most Western destinations.

Reasons students choose Vietnam:

• Six-year Doctor of Medicine pathway, usually five academic years and one year of clinical internship

• English medium batches for international students so classroom teaching does not depend on IELTS or TOEFL

• Document screening, no separate university entrance exam for most Indian applicants

• Tuition fees lesser than private MBBS seats in India, Philippines or some European options

• Tropical disease burden and high outpatient load providing early clinical exposure

• Direct flights and short travel time from major Indian cities

• A degree pathway that can support FMGE or NExT in India, if the college is compliant with the National Medical Commission (NMC) foreign medical graduate rules at the time of admission.

Students are advised to check the medium of instruction, location of internship as well as listing status before making any payment. The college brochure does not set the rules for practice in India, the NMC does.

Why Mekong University Is a Good Medical School In Vietnam

Mekong university is located in the Mekong Delta region and is marketed to Indian students as a focused medical campus rather than a large city university with multiple faculties. The international track has smaller classes than many public schools, which is good for access to labs and faculty contact.

What stands out to applicants?

  • MBBS equivalent general medicine program in English for international students
  • Pre-clinical sciences, para-clinical subjects and hospital rotations curriculum
  • Teaching hospitals for bedside training in medicine, surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics and community health
  • Published admission process with no culture of capitation or donation
  • Coordination of hostel and Indian-food options via education partners in the student areas
  • Faculty with experience coaching foreign students for licensing-exam style questions
  • Student life cheaper and safer than in bigger capitals

Mekong University is better suited for students who want structured teaching and predictable costs rather than a brand-name capital-city campus. Recognition, hospital attachments and exact degree title should be checked against the current NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations before enrollment.

Training and Course Pattern

The Program is based on the six year foreign MBBS pattern.

• Years 1–2: Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and basic clinical skills

• Years 3-4: Microbiology, pathology, forensic medicine and community medicine, pharmacology

Years 5-6: Clinical rotations and a mandatory internship in teaching hospitals

• Assessment: Internal examinations and university and national type final assessments

Post graduation: Indian students who want to practice in India have to clear FMGE or NExT, as the case may be.

Local language support is a plus. Ward work with Vietnamese patients is easier if students learn a basic medical Vietnamese in the first two years, even if the lectures are in English.

Published consultancy figures from Mekong university put tuition at around USD 5,500 to USD 5,600 a year, or around USD 33,600 for the full course. That’s about ₹4.6-5 lakh a year for tuition alone in Indian rupees, not counting hostel and living expenses.
